Wednesday marks the start of Hajj, which is one of Islam's five pillars. Approximately 1.4 million people have so far arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of the pilgrimage, which begins with pilgrims walking seven laps around the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque.
Just like last year, temperatures in Mecca are expected to be very high during the normally five to six day-long pilgrimage. During last year's heatwave – with temperatures occasionally reaching 50 degrees – over 1,300 died, which Saudi authorities this year hope to avoid. Among other things, more places are said to have been shaded and the network of cooling systems has been expanded.
All Muslims who have the means and sufficient health are expected to make the trip to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.
