BK Häcken stormed towards the Champions League in the return qualifying match away against Spanish Atlético Madrid. Then almost everything went wrong. After conceding a goal in stoppage time and another during extra time, the Hising team misses the league phase after a total of 2–3.

After 1–1 in Gothenburg last week, the double meeting was very much alive ahead of Thursday evening's match.

After 37 minutes, the situation hardly got worse for the Hisingen team. A cross from Alice Bergström made its way all the way to Anna Anvegård, who resolutely scored the leading goal.

The home team's players gestured wildly and meant that the ball had hit the hand, but the referee waved away the protests – and the goal was approved.

Penalty drama

In the second half, Atlético Madrid pushed for an equalizer. The national team goalkeeper Jennifer Falk held tight, however, and Häcken seemed to be holding out for a long time. Then the Spanish women were awarded a penalty that was scored via the post in the 100th minute of the match. The double meeting went to extra time.

There, Atlético Madrid drew the longest straw after a goal by Norwegian national team player Synne Jensen in the first quarter of extra time.

Misses millions

Häcken thus misses out on several million kronor. Uefa pays out just over 5 million for advancing to the Champions League.

Instead, the club now awaits qualifying matches for the newly started Europa Cup, where the second qualifying round will be drawn on Friday.

Elsewhere, there was greater Swedish success in the qualifying round. Manchester United, with Anna Sandberg and Julia Zigiotti Olme in the starting lineup, defeated Norwegian Brann 3–0 at home (total 3–1) and advanced to the league phase. Fridolina Rolfö came in from the bench in the 66th minute.
