Guide: Åberg Chases Victory Check Worth 190 Million

+ Who gets to play?

The PGA Tour playoffs consist of three tournaments. In the first tournament (August 15-18), the top 70 players on the Fedex Cup ranking after the regular season get to play. The starting field is reduced to the top 50 for the second tournament (August 22-25).

In the final tour final (August 29-September 1), the top 30 players get to play.

+ How does it work?

The first two playoff tournaments are played just like regular tour tournaments, but without a cut after two days of play. The points earned by players in these tournaments are added to their existing ranking.

In the tour final, the ranking is used to give the top players an advantage over the rest of the starting field. The leader starts the tournament at 10 strokes under par. The second-place player starts at -8, the third at -7, the fourth at -6, and the fifth at -5. Players ranked 6-10 start the tour final at -4, and so on. Players ranked 26-30 start at par.

Through this setup, the winner of the tour final will also be the winner of the entire playoffs.

+ Two Swedes are playing

Rising star Ludvig Åberg gets to play his first PGA playoffs just over a year after his pro debut. The 24-year-old also enters as sixth on the ranking, giving him a good chance of reaching the tour final.

Alex Norén is in 42nd place, which means the 42-year-old needs to play well this week to stay within the top 50 and make it to the next week's tournament.

+ Who is the favorite?

World number one Scottie Scheffler has won six times on the tour this year – including the US Masters major – and recently won the Olympic Games gold. However, Scheffler has never won the PGA Tour playoffs.

This year, he enters with a lead of almost 2,000 points over second-place Xander Schauffele, a fellow American who has won two majors (PGA Championship and British Open) this season.

+ Gigantic prize pot

The prize pot is around 210 million kronor (20 million dollars) for each of the first two tournaments – the winners receive around 42 million kronor (4 million dollars). The prize pot for the tour final has not been officially announced, but last year's winner Viktor Hovland received a check for 190 million kronor (18 million dollars).

+ First tournament (top 70 on Fedex Cup ranking)

Takes place August 15-18 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.

Start times Thursday for the Swedes: Alex Norén at 3:00 PM, Ludvig Åberg at 4:35 PM.

+ Second tournament (top 50)

Takes place August 22-25 at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado.

+ Tour final (top 30)

Takes place August 29-September 1 at East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia.
