Greenland's Jørgen Boassen Faces Backlash, Supports US Ties

Jørgen Boassen invited Donald Trump Jr to Greenland at the beginning of January and is now called "Trump's son". For this, he has received four death threats and got a punch in the face, he tells TT. I think it's about an identity crisis and that people don't want to change their way of living.

Jørgen Boassen has been a big fan of Donald Trump since 2016. During last year's election, he traveled to the USA to campaign – and that's when he came into contact with Donald Trump Jr.

He asked if there was anything he could do for me, and I joked and said that he should come to Greenland, says Jørgen Boassen.

"Very sad"

Donald Trump Jr apparently didn't see it as a joke, since he traveled to Greenland in early January. It also marked the beginning of a diplomatic crisis between Denmark, Greenland, and the USA. Since then, the criticism against Jørgen Boassen has been massive.

It's very sad. We must start working together with the USA. It's the only country that can defend us.

From his home in Nuuk, he followed Vice President JD Vance's speech on Friday evening with excitement – unlike many other Greenlanders, who tell TT that they feel great discomfort over the repeated statements about the USA "taking over" Greenland.

What JD Vance highlighted in his speech – including that Denmark has failed to handle security issues in Greenland and that Greenlanders would benefit from closer cooperation with the USA – he wholeheartedly agrees with.

It was a very good speech, says Jørgen Boassen.

Expresses gratitude

The positive attitude towards the USA's repeated statements about Greenland is, however, rare on the streets of Nuuk. Everyone TT talks to on Friday says either that they are tired of hearing about Donald Trump or that the offensive statements are highly disrespectful.

I'm grateful for what Denmark has done for Greenland. It's thanks to Denmark that we have it so good here, and we wouldn't manage without Denmark, says Victoria Raelsen.
