Kyriakos Pierrakakis was chosen on Thursday afternoon to succeed Irishman Paschal Donohoe, who had resigned from the assignment to instead start working for the World Bank.
Pierrakakis' victory was expected. The only competitor, Belgian colleague Vincent Van Peteghem, has had his candidacy greatly weakened by Belgium's opposition to the EU providing a multi-billion euro loan to Ukraine based on frozen Russian state assets.
Being the president of the Eurogroup primarily means preparing and leading the meetings of the eurozone finance ministers.
Pierrakakis, 42, has only been Greece's finance minister since March. Prior to that, he was the country's digital, education and sports minister since 2019.
