Migrants are reported to have arrived from Libya.
”They do not have the right to apply for asylum, they will not be taken to reception centers, but will be held in police custody until the process for their return begins”, writes Plevris.
Of the 200 migrants, 190 are said to have arrived in Crete, and 11 more were found on the island of Agathonisi, which is located near the Turkish coast. According to state media, one of the migrants was injured and later died in hospital.
Over 2,000 migrants have arrived by boat in Greece during the month of July, something that has sparked anger among local officials and tourist entrepreneurs who have put pressure on the conservative government to take action to stop the flows.
The asylum ban came into force on July 11 and applies for three months. The Ministry of Migration has also prepared legislation that allows for the detention of migrants for up to two years for illegal entry and up to five years if they are caught staying illegally in the country.
