Then we will also be in that government, says Nooshi Dadgostar, after it became clear that the party leadership would win - big - on the government issue.

The election platform states:

"If our votes are needed to form a government, we will also be part of it. This means that we will not support or allow a government that we are not part of to emerge."

Strength statement

We feel very strengthened; the congress is a message of strength from V, says Nooshi Dadgostar, who was also re-elected for two more years as leader of the party at the congress in Örebro.

When asked whether she and deputy party leader Ida Gabrielsson believe that the requirement to be part of a government will help the party get there, Gabrielsson replies:

We can do nothing if another partner is found. Now we say early on that if we are going to be involved, we will be included. And that is a statement that must be made in advance; you cannot make it after an election.

There were motions from associations and parts of the party that it might not be wise to have ultimate demands for government posts and that a role as a support party could also yield political dividends. But their proposal received so little support that it did not even come to a vote.

So unreliable

A common red line in the debate, however, was that the Social Democrats really cannot be trusted if you want to pursue left-wing politics. That requires being in a government, then you have influence over tens of thousands of government decisions, not just a few individual issues.

I think Ida Gabrielsson is better at implementing taxes on billionaires than Mikael Damberg, said Omer Khan, Greater Stockholm, about the Left Party's vice chairman and economic policy spokesperson compared to the Social Democrats' spokesperson.

V would most like to see a majority government that can pass a budget. Then all the red-greens need to be in government, that is, V, S, the Green Party and the Centre Party.

But the Centre Party has made it clear that government cooperation with V is out of the question.

True red line

"That's a real red line," says Nooshi Dadgostar.

The Centre Party's line about banning the party that can get the left side to over 50 percent, that is, us, makes it much more difficult.

- As the political map looks today, majority governments are needed to get policies through. Otherwise, it risks becoming like the last term, and we don't want that, says the V leader.

From the election platform:

"The Left Party is ready to take political responsibility in government. If our votes are needed to form a government, we will also be part of it. This means that we will not support or allow a government that we are not part of to emerge. That is our obligation to our voters.

" However, it will be important who our partner parties are. The Left Party wants to see a majority government that can implement the policies that are decided. We are therefore seeking cooperation with, primarily, the Social Democrats and the Green Party, but also with the Centre Party if necessary to secure a majority in the Riksdag.

" A good election result for the Left Party is a guarantee for a red-green government and a changed direction for Sweden."
