According to Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M), there are several examples of legal cases where it appears that the perpetrator has desecrated the victim's body to hinder the criminal investigation and remove evidence. He mentions the murder of a young woman in Rönninge last Christmas, where the suspect admitted to grave trespass, but denies murder.
"They are doing this simply to escape a life sentence for murder. I think people find this very offensive," says Strömmer.
The penalty for gross violation of the peace of a grave is four years in prison, and the large difference compared with the penalty for murder can be a driving force for desecrating the body, according to Strömmer.
The investigation is due to be completed by January 4, 2027.
