Last week, the news that created disappointment and frustration in southern Sweden arrived. There will never be any new electricity areas after Svenska kraftnät and the EU's counterparts investigated the issue for years.
The significantly higher electricity prices in southern Sweden will therefore persist. Svenska kraftnät concluded that dividing Sweden into new electricity areas would yield poor social benefits.
It is against this backdrop that the government now wants the Swedish electricity areas to be reviewed once again.
Today, the government has made a decision to take the first step towards fewer electricity areas in Sweden, says Ebba Busch (Christian Democrats).
Svenska kraftnät has been tasked with analyzing whether it can have a single electricity area, as one of three alternatives.
This could even out electricity prices in Sweden.
The two other alternatives are two electricity areas (corresponding to today's 1 and 2, respectively 3 and 4) or some variant of the EU proposals that were floated around in the major inquiry that Svenska kraftnät ultimately said no to.
The assignment will be presented in May 2026.
