An American federal jury has sentenced Google to pay approximately 425 million dollars, equivalent to over four billion kronor, for having collected information from app users even when secrecy settings were chosen.

A group of Google users sued the company in July 2020 and demanded over 31 billion dollars in damages. In the lawsuit, it is claimed that Google eavesdropped on, tracked, collected and sold users' activity data for mobile apps regardless of which privacy settings were chosen.

The jury acquitted Google of one of three charges, as it was not considered that the company acted with malice, reports Reuters.

"This decision misunderstands how our products work, and we will appeal it", says Google's spokesperson Jose Castaneda in a statement.

"Our privacy tools give people control over their data, and when they turn off personalization, we respect that choice".
