With the giant jump, the 26-year-old not only raised his personal record and the Greek record by nine centimeters and set a new world best for the year, but also surpassed track and field legends Sergey Bubka (6.15) and Renaud Lavillenie (6.16) on the list of the highest-jumping male pole vaulters of all time.
Only "Manolo" Karalis's rival and friend of the same age, the Swedish-American Armand Duplantis, has jumped higher. "Mondo's" latest world record is 6.30, set at the World Championships in Tokyo last year.
In Saturday's competition at the Greek Championships, Karalis attempted twice to clear the world record height of 6.31 but failed, according to the European Athletics Federation.
In March, the World Indoor Championships in Athletics will be held in Torun, Poland.
