In a statement, Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakawa called the decision "arbitrary and extremely unfair." He also called on Canada to reconsider "its unfortunate decision."

Thomas Partey, formerly of Arsenal but since last year with Spanish club Villarreal, is accused of seven rapes in England. The 33-year-old midfielder is expected to stand trial next year and denies the charges.

After the match against Panama, Thursday night local time in Sweden, Ghana will play its remaining group stage matches in the United States, against England in Boston and against Croatia in Philadelphia. The team is based in Providence, Rhode Island.
