Germany's president Frank-Walter Steinmeier says that a "dark shadow" has fallen over Christmas after the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg on Friday.

The President speaks in his traditional Christmas speech about the "pain, fear, and confusion" over what happened and simultaneously calls for unity in the country.

Hatred and violence must not have the last word. Let us not be driven apart. Let us stand together.

Four women and a nine-year-old boy were killed when a man in a car drove into a crowd at a Christmas market on Friday evening. Over 200 were injured, with around 40 seriously.

A 50-year-old Saudi man has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder.

The police have not been able to establish the motive behind the attack. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has said that the man appears to have acted as an Islamist terrorist, but that he ideologically sees himself as a clear enemy of Islam.
