Germany presents plans to reach the target that the US President Donald Trump says he thinks all NATO countries should reach: to allocate five percent of GDP to defense.
Earlier, the Alliance's Secretary-General Mark Rutte, raised a proposal to allocate 3.5 percent of GDP to defense expenditures and in addition invest a further 1.5 percent in other defense-related areas, such as infrastructure and cybersecurity.
Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul picked up Rutte's proposal to reach "the five percent that President Trump demands", and announced that "we will follow him there."
On Wednesday, Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the country will have Europe's largest conventional army.
