Mikael Tenezos, known as "The Greek", has since May this year been detained in his absence by the Sundsvall, Södertälje and Södertörn district courts. He has been internationally wanted by Interpol.
Last weekend, the gang leader could be arrested, in Mexico.
The leading criminal actor has been in Mexico and has been wanted for a number of serious crimes, including preparation and attempted murder, says Hanna Paradis, deputy head of the investigation unit at the police's national operational department (Noa) at a press conference.
On the highway
According to Mexico's security department, he was arrested along with another person - who, according to the police, is no longer detained - on the highway between Cancún and Mérida. Narcotics were seized during the arrest.
Tenezos' defender Joel Apitzsch confirms to TT that his client has arrived in Sweden.
I will meet him soon and then there will be an interrogation with him where he will be informed of the suspicions of crime, he says.
Controlled network
Tenezos denies the crimes, but is suspected of controlling the so-called Dalen network in Stockholm from Mexico. He is said to have tried to control young perpetrators to commit crimes in Sweden.
According to the police, the arrest destabilizes the criminal network environment in Sweden.
We are now taking advantage of this, by moving forward our positions and working proactively to catch signals in which direction it will go, says Hanna Paradis.
That the power vacuum that arises as a result of the arrest will lead to a new wave of violence is not obvious, Paradis means.
We explore all possible developments and do everything to ensure that the vacuum does not render more violence.
According to mappings made by other media, there are around 30 suspicions of crime against Tenezos. In addition to attempted murder, it involves, among other things, involvement in bombings, narcotics smuggling and money laundering offenses.
Together with another person, who was also detained in his absence in May, he is also suspected of violent crime in Norway.
Kristersson: Just the beginning
According to the Prime Minister, an "extensive" work is underway together with countries around the world to prosecute gang criminals who are abroad.
"My message to gang criminals hiding abroad is this: This is just the beginning. You are not safe anywhere. You will be found, arrested and brought to justice. You will lose the money you have earned, you will lose your Swedish citizenship and be deported", writes Kristersson.
The newspaper El Universal writes that Mikael Tenezos left Mexico by plane from Mérida on Thursday morning, local time.
