Israeli Gal Gadot – best known as Wonder Woman in several Marvel films – has described herself as a “proud Jew and proud Israeli” and has expressed her support for Israel and Hamas on social media since the terrorist-labeled Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. She has also tried to break the silence about sexual violence against Israeli women on the day of the bloody attacks.
"Israel has suffered unimaginable pain. Now we must begin to heal our wounds and rebuild hearts, families and communities," she writes in a comment.
Before becoming an actress, Gal Gadot served in the Israeli military and during the war, she met family members of those held hostage.
Her clear stance has stirred emotions in the United States. When she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March this year, the ceremony was disrupted by both activists protesting the war in Gaza and demonstrators supporting Israel.
The Genesis Prize is awarded annually to individuals who "inspire others through their dedication to the Jewish community and Jewish values." Winners receive one million dollars, which is donated to charity.
Last year, the award went to Argentine President Javier Miel, and previous award winners include director Steven Spielberg, artist Anish Kapoor and actor Natalie Portman.
