Färjestad had six straight losses against their western rival.
It didn't start well on Thursday evening either.
Joakim Nygård did score the leading goal after 4.29 – it held for 22 seconds.
Then, home defenseman Tom Nilsson equalized and broke Frölunda's six-period goal drought after the national team break.
Just over two minutes later, Erik Thorell made it 2–1 in a numerical superiority.
But then the home crowd in a sold-out Scandinavium, 12,044 spectators, had nothing to celebrate.
Four straight goals
Färjestad scored four straight goals – three of which came in the middle period.
Despite a match penalty on Joakim Nygård, Oskar Steen, Axel Bergqvist, and Magnus Nygren ensured that the visitors went ahead to a 4–2 lead.
Frölunda coach Roger Rönnberg was furious.
It's probably the worst we've done this year. We play very naively, don't appreciate the simple things, and offer enormous opportunities on Färjestad's turnovers, he says to TV4 Play.
Henrik Björklund could extend to 5–2 in the third period, and Frölunda had to accept their third straight loss after the break, which they entered as league leaders.
It was all the more uplifting for Färjestad.
Better second and third periods. I think we deserve to win today, a nice victory. We get some confidence and get our self-confidence back, says Steen to TV4 Play.
Bottom team fell big
Luleå took over the league lead on Monday and 5–2 at home against Malmö means the team is still there. But in a tight top struggle, second-place Brynäs and third-place Örebro are only one point behind. Frölunda is now fourth and Färjestad fifth.
For the bottom duo Modo and HV71, it – well, went to the bottom.
Both teams fell big at home, bottom team Modo with 2–7 against Örebro and HV71 with 1–6 against Brynäs.
Jakob Silfverberg scored two goals and set up one for the successful newcomer from Gävle.
