Jacob Peterson was the match-winner, scoring the only goal in the penalty shootout.
"The ice was really bad for the shooters; they had a hard time getting the puck up. It made it easier for us goalies," Frölunda's goalie Lasse Johansson told TV4 Play.
Two in-form teams met in Malmö. The home team had won seven of its last eight matches, and Frölunda had come in on a nine-match winning streak to a packed, 12,600-seat Malmö Arena.
Noah Hasa scored the first and second goals, making it 1–0 and 2–0, one in the first and one in the second period. Axel Sundberg reduced the deficit for Malmö in the middle of the third period. Malmö continued to press for an equalizer, had a shot on the rib and, with just under 2.5 minutes left, came the big chance when Frölunda had Arttu Ruotsalainen sent off and Malmö then pulled goalkeeper Oskar Blomgren. With 44 seconds left in the game, the equalizer came through Carl Persson, who took the game to overtime.
The extra time was goalless, and in the penalty shootout only Frölunda's Jacob Peterson managed to score his penalty.
"We should have closed the match earlier, but we have to be satisfied with taking it to penalties instead," Johansson said.
The Gothenburg team has a big lead in the SHL standings, 16 points ahead of Skellefteå after 29 rounds. Skellefteå can close the gap on Sunday evening when they meet Djurgården.
