3,076 blue-painted and Smurf-dressed people gathered in Landerneau on France's western tip over the weekend.

Thus, the previous record of the number of Smurfs in one place was crushed. The record of 2,762 Smurfs in Lauchringen, Germany in 2019 had long been deemed impossible to beat, and it took Landerneau three attempts.

Saturday's gathering was described as a folk festival. The Smurfs sang Smurf songs in the sun and blue shots were served at the pubs.

We Smurfed the record, said a participant.

A friend persuaded me to participate and I thought: "Why not?" said 82-year-old Simone Pronost, who was dressed up as Smurfette.

The Smurfs are small, blue creatures that live in the forest. The animated series was created in 1958 by Belgian Pierre "Peyo" Culliford.
