I only have one wish, and that is to do everything I can to take care of this wonderful country and support Greenland in a really difficult situation, she says to journalists after arrival.
Frederiksen meets, among others, the outgoing Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede and the incoming Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
"Need to stand together"
But not everyone has been welcoming. Vivian Motzfeldt, party leader of the social democratic Siumut and foreign minister in recent years, thinks that the visit is inappropriate since the new government has not been formally approved by the Greenlandic parliament yet.
Mette Frederiksen says that she has taken the criticism to heart, but emphasizes that the purpose of the trip is to show unity.
We need to stand together in this really, really difficult time that Greenland is experiencing. When Greenland is in a difficult situation, the Kingdom of Denmark and thus also Europe is in a difficult situation, she says.
Greenland is a highly self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark. But Donald Trump claims that he needs the island for the USA's national security and has said that he does not rule out military pressure to take control over the island.
More independence
Regardless of any Danish-Greenlandic disagreements, it is, according to Frederiksen, a matter of course that Greenland and Denmark, under "the Americans' pressure on Greenland, in relation to sovereignty and borders and the future, must stand together".
One of Greenland's greatest wishes in relation to Denmark is to be able to conduct a more independent foreign policy. Today, a Danish representative must be present in all such contexts.
Frederiksen says that the matter will be discussed and that she will do everything she can to ensure an equal relationship between the two countries.
At the same time as we handle this difficult situation, she says.
