After informing the King of the election results and the parliamentary situation, Mette Frederiksen submitted the government's resignation on Wednesday morning, the royal household said on its website.

According to Frederiksen, a new government could include parties from the left to the centrist Moderates, which have been given a pivotal role.

"As far as I can see, and we will learn more about this today, the most realistic thing is to investigate whether a government can be formed, represented by Franciska and concluded with Lars," she says.

Franciska Rosenkilde is the leader of the social-liberal party Alternativet and Lars Løkke Rasmussen is the leader of the Moderates.

“Must choose a direction”

Pia Olsen Dyhr, party leader of the Socialist People's Party (SF), still wants to see Mette Frederiksen as prime minister, but she will not give a mandate to a government that does not include SF, she said on Wednesday.

She adds that Frederiksen must choose between Dyhr and Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, who is the party leader of Venstre (V), Ritzau reports.

"I fundamentally believe that she has to choose a direction," says Pia Olsen Dyhr.

But from the centre-right Moderates, which won the election, party leader Lars Løkke Rasmussen says he wants to lead the negotiations.

Disappointment for S

None of the traditional blocs gained a majority in the election, which was a disappointment for Mette Frederiksen's party, the Social Democrats.

Both the red and blue blocs now appear to be dependent on the Moderates' support, and forming a government is expected to take time.

The Moderates have 14 seats in the Folketing after the election, while the Red Bloc has 84 seats and the Blue Bloc has 77 seats.

A majority in the Folketing requires 90 seats.
