France's president Emmanuel Macron presented the country's new government on Sunday – nearly a month after Sébastien Lecornu was sworn in as new prime minister.

Among the appointments is Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Economy 2017–2024, who becomes Minister of Defence.

Roland Lescure gets the post of Minister of Economy with the difficult task of delivering a budget.

Several key ministers remain in their previous jobs. This applies to Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin.

Rachida Dati, scandal-plagued Culture Minister who will go to court in a corruption case next year, is also staying in the same role.

The new-old government is facing a divided and difficult political situation.

Lecornu, who is Macron's seventh prime minister, was appointed after his predecessor François Bayrou lost a vote of confidence in September.

A political crisis has been ongoing since last year's new elections, called by Macron, which resulted in a parliament divided into three rival blocks.

Lecornu plans to deliver a speech in parliament on Tuesday. At the same time, several parties on the left have threatened to pass a vote of no confidence against the prime minister.
