On Friday, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu forced the 2026 budget through parliament without a vote.

This is the third and final time this can be used, which opens the door to another vote of no confidence.

"France must have a budget. That is why I take the government's responsibility for the entire 2026 budget proposal," he told the National Assembly, invoking constitutional power to avoid a vote.

If Lecornu survives a no-confidence vote, the budget is expected to be adopted on Monday. The decision to use the constitutional tool marks a break from a previous promise to seek parliamentary approval in a bid to avoid the same fate as his two predecessors.

France, the eurozone's second-largest economy, has been in political crisis since President Emmanuel Macron's 2024 parliamentary election.
