France's data protection authority fines Google with a fine of 325 million euros, equivalent to over 3.5 billion kronor. Also, the Chinese e-commerce giant Shein gets a slap on the wrist with a fine.

Shein is fined with a fine of 150 million euros, equivalent to 1.65 billion kronor.

The two companies, which have tens of millions of users in France, are fined for having placed so-called cookies in users' web browsers without their explicit consent.

Cookies are small text files that are stored in the web browser and save information when you visit different websites. They are of great importance for companies that engage in targeted advertising.

Wednesday's fine is the third that the French data protection authority CNIL has issued against Google, which in 2020 had to pay 100 million euros and the following year 150 million euros.
