Lemieux played NHL hockey for 21 years, winning two Stanley Cups with New Jersey and one each with Colorado and Montreal. With 80 playoff goals, he ranks ninth all-time in NHL history.

The forward was considered one of the toughest players to face in the playoffs and spent 1,777 minutes in the penalty box, wrote The Athletic.

The Canadian played a total of 1,215 regular season games, scoring 379 goals and 786 points. He ended his career in 2009.

"He was loved by his wife and four children, and on behalf of the Lemieux family, we kindly ask that everyone respect their privacy during this difficult time," the NHL Alumni organization wrote.

Lemieux's younger brother, Jocelyn Lemieux, also played several years in the NHL.
