The central part of Liverpool was full of people celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title when a car suddenly ploughed into the crowd.
A total of 47 people were injured, 27 of whom were taken to hospital. Eleven of them are still in hospital, all with stable injuries and "recovering well", according to BBC.
The 53-year-old British man who drove the car was arrested on the spot. He had high levels of drugs in his blood when he drove into the crowd, but despite several interrogations, they have not been able to determine a possible motive. However, the incident is not being investigated as terrorism and they are not looking for more perpetrators.
Large parts of central Liverpool were closed off on Monday for the football team's celebration and the traditional parade held after the season finale. The street where the car drove into the people is still cordoned off and being examined by police technicians.
According to the police, the man was able to get past all the barriers by closely following an ambulance, writes The Guardian.
Videos published on social media show the car hitting a man who is thrown into the air. Then the vehicle heads towards a larger gathering of people – and ploughs through them.
It happened extremely fast. We only heard "pop, pop, pop" when people hit the car's bonnet, says witness Harry Rashid to AP.
Both King Charles and a long list of politicians and people associated with both the city and the Liverpool football team have condemned the incident. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also praised the rescue effort.
- Liverpool stands united and the whole country stands with Liverpool, he says on Tuesday.
