Sports Minister Jakob Forssmed (KD) came down hard on Canada's cheating in men's curling in a post on X. On site in Antholz, he stands by the criticism. "We in Sweden like fair play, and other countries do too," says Forssmed.

The minister has followed most of the Olympics from home and has been tweeting about Sweden's successes. He also couldn't stay away from the controversial curling row, in which Sweden accused Canada of cheating.

Forssmed's post received a lot of attention. In it, he called out Canadians Brad Jacobs, Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert.

"I've never liked Sweden's Team Edin as much as I do now. Good game, a narrow loss against the pre-selected Canada, but above all: Oskar Eriksson and the team stood up against cheating and dominating behavior," the minister wrote.

“Do a little as they want”

During a tour before the men's biathlon relay in Antholz, he explained to TT:

The reason for this is that in certain contexts some of these big nations can do as they please. There the Swedes showed that we do not accept that. They stood up against this and it has led to an incredibly beneficial discussion within the sport of curling.

You could say it was started by the Swedish players, by Oskar Eriksson, who spoke out and said we don't buy that.

Forssmed reacted strongly to the pictures showing Canada's Marc Kennedy illegally poked the stone after releasing the handle.

“Something that doesn't sit right”

You can get away with that, but you should suspend a Ukrainian (skeleton rider Vladyslav Heraskevytj) who has compatriots on his helmet. He should be punished, but a Canadian who swears and cheats with a rock... there's something wrong with that, said Jakob Forssmed.

If it's a gentleman's sport, you have to hand over the victory to the Swedes, apologize, or something like that.

Team Niklas Edin has underperformed significantly at the Olympics, only winning one match and is not playing for medals.

Instead, the Swedes have started a full-scale discussion about whether curling follows its own rules. The cheating allegations have received significant international coverage in various media outlets.

Sweden will continue to push for referees to act much more actively to stop foul play.

We need to act at the federation level. We will bring it up again at the next big federation meeting in Geneva around Walpurgis weekend," Swedish Curling Federation chairman Michael Marklund said to Aftonbladet.
