The releases come after the country's president, Nicolás Maduro, was captured by the United States in a raid last week. Trump has said the United States will "rule" Venezuela for a time and has threatened the country with a second attack.
Trump now appears to be backing off, according to a social media post. But he writes that American ships will remain in the area "for security reasons."
Among those released so far are former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez.
"Now it's all over," Márquez says in a video filmed by a journalist.
Márquez was one of the candidates running against Maduro in the disputed elections in the summer of 2024. Many observers consider the rightful winner of the election to be Edmundo González Urrutia, who is in exile.
Jorge Rodríguez, speaker of the country's parliament and brother of interim president Delcy Rodríguez, announced on Thursday that Venezuela would release Venezuelan and international prisoners.
Opposition leader and Nobel laureate María Corina Machado has praised the decision to release prisoners, saying it shows that "injustice does not last forever."
