Former Leeds legend Terry Yorath - whose life was marked by tragedy - has died aged 75 after a short illness, his family has said.

BBC presenter Gabby Logan, daughter of Terry Yorath, had to abruptly withdraw from presenting the popular television programme "Match of the Day" on Wednesday evening and was replaced due to an "urgent family situation."

The family received the news of Yorath's death on Thursday morning.

Terry Yorath was a midfielder in the classic Leeds side that won the league in 1974 and reached the finals of the European Cup (now the Champions League), the Cup Winners' Cup and the FA Cup.

He made 59 appearances for Wales and, as coach, came close to leading the Welsh national team to the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Yorath's life was marked by two tragedies. His 15-year-old son, Daniel, died in 1992 from a congenital heart defect while the two were playing football at home.

Seven years earlier, Yorath, then assistant manager at Bradford, was present at the Valley Parade fire disaster during a match in which 56 fans were killed and 270 injured. His family were at the stadium and escaped unharmed, and Yorath survived by smashing a window and climbing out.
