The former Defense Minister is accused of having had a large part in the chaos that followed the sudden state of emergency, reports the news agency Yonhap.
Kim, a former general who was appointed minister in August, has previously apologized and taken responsibility for the unrest that followed. After being dismissed from his job, Kim was forbidden to leave the country on Thursday.
In connection with the arrest on Sunday morning, his mobile phone was seized, announces the prosecutor.
President Yoon Suk-Yeol shocked his fellow citizens and the world late on Tuesday when he declared a state of emergency with accompanying martial law, citing that the opposition was hindering the government's work. He was forced to back down from it just six hours later, after the 190 members who quickly gathered in parliament unanimously voted against it.
Since then, the pressure on the president to resign has increased. Early on Saturday, Yoon apologized, but without resigning. Later on Saturday, he avoided being impeached in parliament, after his party colleagues boycotted the vote.
