A previous minor investigation has shown that the teenager may be suspected of suffering from a serious mental disorder.
When the trial in Stockholm District Court was to end on Wednesday, the Stockholm District Court decided that he should undergo a forensic psychiatric examination to determine whether he can be sentenced to prison or not.
"The decision means that the district court has found that convincing evidence has been presented that the man committed the charged acts," the court writes in a press release.
Worked for 12 years
The trial will conclude after the investigation is completed, on January 7 next year.
The prosecution had requested a minimum sentence of 12 years for the 18-year-old, unless he is deemed to suffer from a serious mental disorder. The reason they are not requesting a longer sentence is because he was only 17 years old during parts of the time covered by the indictment.
"It affects quite a lot. It would have been longer for an adult," prosecutor Henrik Olin told TT.
TT has been in contact with the man's lawyer, who declined to comment.
Have admitted preparation
During the trial, the 18-year-old admitted, among other things, to preparing for terrorist crimes and participating in a terrorist organization, according to the Islamic State indictment.
He has also denied an attempted murder in Germany for which he is charged together with another teenager. For that teenager, prosecutors have called for closed youth care for at least two years and six months.
According to the indictment, the 18-year-old planned to carry out a terrorist attack against the Culture Festival this summer, which took place at several locations in central Stockholm in August. The attack was to be carried out with weapons or explosives.
