The international football federation Fifa is blacklisting people who spread threats and hatred and preventing them from buying tickets to events such as the World Cup, president Gianni Infantino said in a new report.

The announcement comes after FIFA stepped up its work against hate and threats on social media after previously receiving criticism for not protecting players sufficiently.

Among other things, a report from the players' union Fifpro revealed that one in five players was exposed to hate and threats on social media during the 2023 Women's World Cup.

FIFA has responded to the criticism by introducing a “Social Media Protection Service”, a combination of technical aids and more flexible alarm functions to protect players.

"I want to be very clear that football must be a safe and inclusive environment - both on the pitch, in the stands and online," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a press release.

Now Fifa says it has reported over 30,000 threatening posts in connection with its tournaments this year alone to social media companies and has filed police reports against eleven people in Argentina, Brazil, France, the UK and the US, among others. One case has been handed over to Interpol.

In addition, Fifa is punishing online trolls on its own. Among other things, people who have been identified by Fifa as threatening online are now being stopped from buying tickets to upcoming events such as the Men's World Cup in North America next year.

"This behavior has no place in either football or society and Fifa is doing everything possible by reporting these incidents and also by blacklisting individuals from purchasing tickets to Fifa tournaments," Infantino said.
