The US Department of Justice has previously this year ordered the prosecutors to drop the charges. The reasoning had nothing to do with the case itself. It was instead about Adams having to be able to focus on his work and help in Trump's offensive against illegal immigration.
The Department of Justice wanted to keep the door open to resume the charges later, after the mayoral election in November. But the judge says no to that.
"Dismissing the case without reservations would create the inevitable impression that the mayor's freedom is dependent on his ability to implement the administration's immigration policy priorities, and that he would be more beholden to the federal government's demands than his own voters' wishes", the judge writes in the decision.
Democrat Adams has been accused of, among other things, receiving bribes and illegal campaign contributions from foreign sources.
