+ Favorites
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, of course. World number one Scheffler won last week's PGA tour event in Texas by a landslide, 31 strokes under par. World number two McIlroy, meanwhile, comes more laid-back than usual after completing his "career grand slam" with the win in the US Masters in April.
Besides the two top favorites - who play together the first two days - it's also impossible to ignore Bryson DeChambeau (won last on the LIV tour and is revenge-hungry after the heavy finish in Masters), Xander Schauffele (reigning champion) and Justin Thomas (extremely in-form, also won the last PGA Championship held at Quail Hollow).
+ Swedes
Ludvig Åberg (who tees off at 19.25, Swedish time, on Thursday) fought for a long time for victory in the Masters, but has otherwise been unusually pale for the past two months. At Augusta, the 25-year-old raised himself significantly after missing the qualifying limit in two straight tournaments. Can Åberg do something similar now, after the placings 54th and 60th in the last two starts?
For Alex Norén (starts at 13.22), it will be the second tournament after the injury problems that stopped him earlier this year. In his comeback in Philadelphia last week, Norén finished 51st.
+ Slam chance
Rory McIlroy became the sixth player in history to complete a "career grand slam". Now Jordan Spieth can become the seventh to win all four majors. 31-year-old Spieth - who had already won the Masters, US Open and The Open before turning 24 - is not showering with victories nowadays. Since the triumph in The Open 2017, the former world number one, now ranked 48th, has only won twice.
+ The Course
Quail Hollow hosted the PGA Championship in 2017, when Thomas won. Otherwise, the course in Charlotte, North Carolina, is one of the annual stops on the PGA tour. Last year, McIlroy won here convincingly. Åberg withdrew late due to his knee problems.
+ Weather
Rain before the tournament makes the already long course (nearly 7,000 meters) feel even longer. But now temperatures around 30 degrees and clear skies are expected, so the course will likely dry up quite a bit during the week.
+ Start field
The PGA Championship likes to emphasize that it has the strongest start field. It's noticeable, among other things, that 99 of the world's 100 highest-ranked players tee off this year. Only injured Billy Horschel is missing among the total of 156 players.
