Jörgen Jönsson will leave his job as head coach of Färjestad, the SHL club said on its website. Christer Olsson will take over responsibility.

Färjestad is seventh in the standings after 34 rounds and has lost its last four matches.

"I have the utmost respect for Jörgen Jönsson. But we are in a results-based industry, and we now see it as necessary to make changes for the good of the team," says the SHL club's sports director, Rickard Wallin, in a statement.

"Overall assessment"

Wallin continues:

"The change comes after an autumn in which we believe we had the potential to be in a completely different place, both in terms of the table and in terms of our play, than we are today. We want to give the team the best possible conditions to reach its full potential, and we feel that this change is part of that. I personally, and Färjestad BK as a club, have the utmost respect for Jörgen Jönsson. But we have made a collective assessment of the situation and landed on this decision, a sad decision for everyone involved. Our focus now is on the team, the next match and the job we have to do together going forward."

Jörgen Jönsson was a longtime acclaimed player for Färjestad, where he played 711 matches and won five Swedish Championship gold medals.

Signed for four years

He also won a gold medal as an assistant coach.

Jönsson signed a four-year contract when he returned to Färjestad for this season after a successful spell with Växjö Lakers, where he won two Swedish Championship gold medals.

The main responsibility has been taken over by Christer Olsson, the former assistant coach.

"I take on the task with great humility and am fully focused on the team. We will continue to build on the strength that exists in this group and work hard to take the next step," Olsson tells the club's website.

Ole-Kristian Tollefsen leaves his position as assistant in the J20 team and takes the same position with the A team. Mikael Karlberg, Daniel Hansen and Erik Granqvist remain part of the leadership team.

Färjestad meets Djurgården on home ice on Saturday.
