Far Right to Lead EU Climate Talks, Sparking Concerns

The difficult negotiations on the EU's next climate goal will be led by the party group Patriots for Europe (PFE), which gathers parties on the far right in the European Parliament, several media report. The group has been a tough opponent to the EU's climate policy.

”That climate deniers are now going to lead the work with the EU's climate goals makes me genuinely appalled. It's like asking someone who believes the earth is flat to draw a map”, says Social Democrat and Member of the European Parliament Heléne Fritzon in a written comment to TT.

The PFE includes, among other things, the French National Rally and the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz, which is led by Viktor Orbán.

It is someone from that party group who will be appointed as so-called rapporteur – the one responsible for preparing and drafting reports on legislative proposals, according to the websites Euronews and Politico.

A rapporteur cannot stop other groups from reaching an agreement, but can recommend a political line and can slow down the process.

"When a representative from Orbán's party group – which has consistently opposed all climate policy – gets that responsibility, it threatens the entire European and Swedish green transition and growth. I will do everything I can to improve the proposal, but it will not be an easy journey”, says Heléne Fritzon.

Jordan Bardella, party leader of National Rally and chairman of the PEF, said earlier this year that he wants to stop the EU's "green rush" to limit global warming.

In the EU Commission's proposal for a new climate goal, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by around 90 percent by 2040, compared to 1990 levels.
