Recently, the Republican-led Senate approved Robert F Kennedy as the new Health Minister in Donald Trump's government, despite doctors' warnings that he has spread false information about, among other things, vaccines.
The laboratories that produce influenza vaccines have previously relied on the pharmaceutical authority FDA to annually select strains of the virus, based on the variants expected to spread in the USA.
The selection is usually made by an expert committee convened by FDA based on information from the World Health Organization.
This year's meeting was cancelled on Wednesday evening. Paul Offit, a member of FDA's expert committee, tells CBS News that everyone is trying to understand what is happening.
