Already before the match against bottom team Southampton, there was great excitement around the farewell party, and many supporters wanted to say goodbye to their second home. The arena is one of the most classic arenas in England with its characteristic dense, rectangular shape where the stands begin tightly onto the pitch.
Since September 2, 1892, Goodison Park has been home to Everton's men's team. But now the 133-year era is over.
The team played their last home match at the arena on Sunday, and now the move to the newly built "Hill Dickinson Park" awaits, which the new arena will officially be called.
And it was a successful farewell party.
Already in the sixth minute, the home fans could cheer when Iliman Ndiaye gave Everton the lead. And just before halftime, he had extended to 2-0, which became the match's final goal.
The match was of microscopic sporting significance, as Southampton had already secured their position as bottom team and Everton secured their 13th place. The historical value of the match was all the greater. Several supporters were seen crying in the stands during the final minutes.
After the match, a ceremony will be held to say goodbye to the arena.
Goodison Park will, however, remain for a while longer. It has already been made clear that the women's team will play their home matches at the arena next season.
