However, products such as "vegan beef" or "vegan liver" will be banned going forward, along with about 20 other words that may only be used for charcuterie products.
Tuesday's vote confirms a deal reached in March between the European Parliament and EU member states, in which proposals to also ban words like "veggie sausage" and "veggie burger" were ultimately shot down.
"It's good that common sense prevails. Actually, the EU shouldn't get involved in this kind of thing at all, but I don't think it matters that you can't say vegan goat," says Swedish member of parliament Heléne Fritzon (S) in a statement via text message.
