Kremlin to Review Ceasefire Proposal Amid Ukraine's 30-Day Demand

Ukraine and its allies want Russia to agree to an unconditional ceasefire of at least 30 days from Monday. If Moscow does not comply with the demand, stricter sanctions against Russia and more support to Ukraine are awaited. The Kremlin announces that it will "think through" the proposal.

If we breach this ceasefire, we agree that massive sanctions will be prepared and implemented between Europeans and Americans, says France's President Emmanuel Macron in Kyiv, reports AFP.

According to Macron, a ceasefire will be monitored mainly by the US but with support from Europe. The hope is that a ceasefire will pave the way for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia about a "robust and lasting peace", according to Macron.

The stance we have reached today means absolute unity in many countries around the world, including the US, that there must be a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, says Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the press conference.

Peskov: New development

Kremlin's spokesperson Dmitrij Peskov tells CNN that attempts to pressure Russia "are quite meaningless" but that the proposal for a ceasefire should be considered.

We must think it through. It's a new development, he says.

Earlier on Saturday, Peskov accused Europe of being "confrontational" and making "contradictory statements".

In an interview with ABC News, Peskov also set a condition: Ukraine's allies must stop all arms deliveries before a ceasefire can become relevant, otherwise, Ukraine can "take advantage" of the pause to mobilize and arm up.

Why should we agree to give Ukraine such an advantage?

The demand for a ceasefire of at least 30 days comes after Macron and Starmer, together with Germany's Friedrich Merz and Poland's Donald Tusk, met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Kyiv.

Coalition of willing

Besides the four government leaders, other countries in the "coalition of willing" – about 30 Western countries that have committed to deeper support for Ukraine – participated in Saturday's meeting remotely.

"Ukraine and all allies are ready for a full, unconditional ceasefire on land, in the air, and at sea for at least 30 days starting already on Monday", writes Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha on X.

According to him, the quintet also spoke with the US President Donald Trump during the meeting in Kyiv.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who participated digitally, writes on X that the ball is now in Russia's court.

If Russia also says yes, a first step towards peace can be taken. If Russia continues to obstruct and delay, strong joint measures from both Europe and the US must be taken.
