The announcement comes ahead of an extraordinary meeting with EU countries' ambassadors in Brussels on Friday afternoon. Details of the content will later be presented by Chairman Ursula von der Leyen and Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas in a statement, announces the Commission's head of communications Paula Pinho.
The package is expected to include, among other things, faster measures to disconnect Russian gas and oil, since US President Donald Trump last week demanded more on that topic.
Additionally, more ships suspected of belonging to the so-called shadow fleet will be affected by sanctions. The EU Commission is also expected to want to strike against more Russian banks and more companies in other countries - not least in China - that are considered to be helping Russia to circumvent previous sanctions.
In the usual order, all EU countries must now agree on the package before it can come into force.
