The EU Commission and member states are preparing a "safety sweep" against dangerous products on websites.

"A sweep is a series of controls conducted simultaneously on websites to detect breaches of EU consumer laws within a specific sector", it is explained in a press release.

The announcement comes in conjunction with an annual report which states that a total of 4,137 alerts about dangerous products were received by the EU Commission last year – the highest number since the EU's alert system was created in 2003. Most of the products were various forms of cosmetics (36 percent), toys (15 percent), and electrical appliances (10 percent).

The EU Commission has recently toughened its stance against websites such as Shein and Temu, promising more controls of their products.

"I look forward to continuing this work to ensure that we do not leave any blind spots in our review", says Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath in the press release.
