The European Commission suspects that Chinese security company Nuctech is competing with the help of illegal state aid.

A formal investigation was opened on Thursday against the company, which manufactures security and inspection scanners for airports, ports and railway stations, among other things. Nuctech is headquartered in China and is owned by state-controlled nuclear technology company Tsinghua Tongfang.

"Threat detection systems, including security and inspection scanners, play a crucial role in ensuring that Europe can be open, but also secure. So we want a level playing field in the market for such systems," writes Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera in a press release.
