"With today's proposal, we make cohesion policy clearer, more targeted and more effective, and linked to the EU's challenges," says Regional Commissioner Raffaele Fitto in a press release on the modernization of support now proposed.
New money is not included in the revision, but the idea is that EU countries should redistribute their support, including to improve roads and railways in the east that may be needed for defense purposes. Regional support can also be used to improve production capacity in the defense industry.
The proposal also encourages investments in affordable housing, better water management, and charging stations and other energy infrastructure.
The hope is that the new support rules can be approved as early as this year.
