Sweden is against when the EU Commission, after almost 20 years of disagreement among the member states, wants to scrap its proposal for measures against discrimination.
– I will speak clearly for the retention of the equal treatment directive and urge all member states to join the large majority that wants to adopt the directive, says Minister for Gender Equality Nina Larsson (The Liberals) at an EU meeting in Luxembourg on Thursday where the issue is being discussed.
The EU Commission's proposal concerns discrimination on the grounds of religion, political conviction, disability, age and sexual orientation and has been debated since 2008, without the member states being able to agree.
The European Parliament is also divided on the issue.
