Wednesday's yes applies to the preliminary agreement reached after compromise negotiations with the European Parliament last week.
“We have secured robust safeguards to protect the interests of European companies,” a spokesperson for the Cyprus presidency of the Council of Ministers said in a written statement.
This means that "only" three more formal yes votes remain - from the European Parliament's Trade Committee, the entire European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers - before the long-drawn-out process is complete regarding the tariff agreement reached between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump in Scotland last year.
In principle, it means a 15 percent tariff on most goods from the EU to the US.
