EU countries agree to abolish duty-free access for packages worth less than 150 euros – in practice to combat competition from China.

The member states' finance ministers gave their political support for the abolition at their meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

The idea is that it will happen from 2028, although the countries are pushing to bring in the change as early as next year.

The change comes after the huge increase in small packages from other countries in recent years – not least from China and the heavily criticized online retail giants Temu and Shein.

"This is a crucial step to protect European consumers and for the internal market to be able to combat more effectively dangerous products and those that do not meet our European requirements," French Finance Minister Roland Lescure told the AFP news agency.
