The eruption of the Etna volcano poses no danger to the public, according to Italy's national institute for geophysics and volcanology, as reported by AP.
It was part of a crater that collapsed during the eruption on Monday. A large cloud of smoke, several kilometers high, rose towards the sky, but air traffic has been able to continue as usual.
The smoke cloud was caused by the crater collapse at approximately 2,900 meters above sea level, reports the newspaper Corriere della Sera. Lava began spewing out of the southeastern crater, but it has not spread.
Mount Etna is 3,300 meters high and the largest active volcano in Europe.
