It was an Eritrean victory in the third stage of the Tour de France, after a big crash in the long final sprint that affected several top cyclists.

Biniam Girmay won the 230.8 kilometer long stage – the longest stage of the tour – which started in Piacenza with the finish line in the old Olympic city of Turin.

The winning time was 5.26,48.

Second was Colombian Gaviria Fernando, and third Arnaud De Lie, Belgium.

The field was together for large parts of the competition, but with about 65 kilometers left, Frenchman Fabien Grellier accelerated and put in a strong attack.

The gap to the rest of the starting field grew gradually and was for a long time around half a minute, before the distance decreased and with 28 kilometers left, Grellier was caught up.

In the overall standings, Richard Carapaz, Ecuador, took over the lead.
