More than 8,000 refineries, coal-fired power plants, steel mills and other large industries have since 2009 been required to report their emissions of greenhouse gases in the USA. Since the program began, they have reduced their emissions by 20 percent.
But now EPA wants to scrap the program, which is described as bureaucratic, expensive and meaningless by the authority's top Lee Zeldin.
The environmental organization Natural Resources Defense Council describes the proposal as a "cynical attempt to lead the American people astray, because if they do not know who the polluters are, they cannot do anything to hold those responsible".
